Character Where
there is a will there is a way. All
our dreams can come true - if we have the courage to pursue them. You
have to believe in yourself. That's the secret of success. Self-trust
is the first secret of success. Virtue
is bold, and goodness never fearful. Be
studious in your profession, and you will be learned. Be industrious and
frugal, and you will be rich. Be sober and temperate, and you will be
healthy. Be in general virtuous, and you will be happy. It
is better to be faithful than famous. The
path down to evil is easy. Labor
is often the father of pleasure. Diligence
is the mother of good luck. Practice
makes perfect. A
penny saved is a penny gained. Poverty
is no sin. Human
pride is human weakness. Pride
costs us more than hunger, thirst, and cold. A
great man is always willing to be little. Freedom
lies in the being bold. All
men cannot be first. The
love of money is the root of all evil. To
err is human, to forgive divine. A
small leak will sink a great ship. Kind
words are the music of the world. Speech
is silver, but silence is gold. Well
done is better than well said. When
angry, count ten before you speak; if very angry, a hundred. Speak
not when others speak; sit not when others stand, and walk not when others
stop. Speak
not in an unknown tongue in company, but in your own language; and that as
those of quality do, and not as the vulgar. Think
before you speak; pronounce not imperfectly, nor bring out your words too
hastily, but orderly and distinctly. Whoever
is in a hurry shows that the thing he is about is too big for him. Any
affectation whatsoever in dress implies, in my mind, a flaw in the
understanding. Politeness
costs nothing and gains everything. Every
action in company ought to be with some sign of respect to those present. In
the presence of others sing not to yourself with a humming voice, nor drum
with your fingers or feet. Turn
not your back to others, especially in speaking; jog not the table or desk
on which another reads or writes; lean not on anyone. Be
no flatterer, neither play with anyone that delights not to be played
with. Read
no letters, books, or papers in company; but when there is necessity for
doing it, you must ask leave. Come not near the books or writings of
anyone so as to read them unasked; also look not nigh when another is
writing a letter. Let
your countenance be pleasant, but in serious matters somewhat grave. Gaze
not on the marks or blemishes of others, and ask not how they came. What
you may speak in secret to your friend deliver not before others. Undertake
not what you cannot perform; but be careful to keep your promise. Use
no hurtful deceit. Think innocently and justly; if you speak, speak
accordingly. |
